How Ness Kosice Developed its Own App to Address a Problem Posed by a Local Triathlon

When it comes to big races, sometimes it is impossible to have a mass start for all of the participants. This was exactly the case for the recently held Ness City Triathlon Kosice that was organized by Ness. With close to 400 participants, the organizers had to confront the reality that the pool assigned for the swim portion could not accommodate all of the swimmers at the same time.

However, given the resources that exist right within Ness Digital Engineering, we didn’t have to look outside for solutions. A team sitting at Kosice addressed the problem by creating a unique application christened Gundersen, to fix the issue at hand and help provide accurate results despite a staggered start which is not something one would traditionally see in triathlons.

The application processed the data from swimming results, created the results list and generated the running start list. It also divided all participants into 3 sections based on these results. Each one of the participants after their swim leg, due to this real time data, was able to see which section he/she would be starting their run portion from and the time left before they could begin their respective runs. This application hence helped with releasing accurate final results.

The application for Ness City Triathlon Kosice was tailor-made by Ness Kosice software engineers Roman Vesely, Adam Melichar and Tomas Igrini. Adam Melichar, Senior Software Engineer noted “Who else should develop the app for Ness City Triathlon if not employees from Ness? We did not hesitate for a second and we started to work immediately. The testing results were fine and we were pretty confident even during the race. The organizers and people loved it and we sent a strong message to IT community here in Kosice.”

The triathlon had participants swimming for 750 meters (0.46 miles), cycling 20 kilometers (12.24 miles) and running for 5 kilometers (3.10 miles).

Here’s a video of how it all worked out:
